ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center

ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center in Charlotte joint ventures of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (CML) and the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte (CTC).

August 1997 saw the creation of ImaginOn, a cooperative venture between Children’s Theatre and the Public Library. This establishment offers Charlotteans a one-of-a-kind experience, as it is the only children’s theatre in the country that is also a public library. In 1999, voters passed a bond referendum to fund the construction of the Children’s Theatre and the Public Library. This led to the creation of ImaginOn, a center for children’s literacy and arts education. In October 2000, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates of New York (now known as Holzman Moss) and Gantt Huberman Architects of Charlotte were selected to design the project. In December 2000, the Programming Endowment Campaign was launched with Ken Lewis and Ed Shelton at the helm. March 2003 was a momentous month – the groundbreaking of ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center. This new facility would merge Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, creating one of the largest youth focused cultural centres in the United States. With its cutting-edge technology and design, ImaginOn would be a place where learning and creativity collide.

It is an award-winning library and theatre for kids located in Uptown Charlotte. The facility opened to the public on October 2005. It was created to serve as both a library and theatre for children.

The ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center opened its doors to the public in October of 2005. This center is a joint venture between the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library and the Children's Museum of Charlotte. It is an amazing place that offers interactive exhibits and programs for children of all ages, that serves children and young adults from birth through age 17. It is the first public library in the United States to offer this level of service.

The center has two locations: the Main Library and the Children's Library. The Main Library has an auditorium, a technology lab, meeting rooms, and exhibition spaces. The Children's Library has areas for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; a multimedia lab; and spaces for reading, studying, and playing.

The library has a really cool setup. There are two buildings – one for books and one for multimedia. The multimedia building is really neat, because it has a giant theater, an art studio, a recording studio, and a play area. The whole place is designed to help kids learn.
